Preparation is part of the job

Paint goes over a clean, repaired surface. A floor goes over a flat, dry subfloor. Cabinet coating starts after grease and loose finish are removed.

The cause comes first

A leak, a soft ceiling, or a moving crack is described before new material covers it. Finishing starts when that area is dry and stable.
