Include closets, doorways, and the waste from cuts. A straight hallway wastes less material than a room full of angles.

Floors
Flooring installation here means a residential floor: vinyl, laminate, or hardwood. The material pages cover the product differences. This page covers the choice and the subfloor work they all share.
Flooring contractors in Dallas get asked for a new floor before anyone has looked at what is underneath it. A flooring installation estimate starts with the room, the old surface, and the material family. Vinyl plank, laminate, and hardwood can look similar in a photograph and behave very differently next to a sink, a patio door, or a sunlit window.
This page is the overview. If you already know the material, go to vinyl flooring installation, laminate flooring installation, or hardwood flooring installation.
| Question | Vinyl plank | Laminate | Hardwood |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you see | A printed or embossed wear surface, often wood-look | A photographic wood image under a clear wear layer | Real wood, solid or engineered |
| Water | Many planks tolerate splashes better than wood products. Seams can still fail if water sits. | The core swells if water reaches it. Poor fit for wet rooms. | Solid wood moves with humidity. Engineered moves less, but it is not a shower floor. |
| Refinishing later | Not sanded. Damaged planks are replaced if extras were saved. | Not sanded. The image layer is thin. | Solid floors can often be sanded. Engineered floors have a limited wear layer. |
| Underfoot | Depends on the core and the underlayment | Usually a floating floor over foam or an attached pad | Nailed, stapled, glued, or floated, depending on the product |
This is general product behavior, not a promise about a brand that has not been selected yet.
The subfloor has to be clean, dry, and flat within the tolerance the product allows. A dip that was invisible under carpet can show as a bounce or a peaked joint under a floating floor. Squeaks, loose panels, and high seams get corrected before the finish floor hides them.
Moisture matters in a slab house, which is common in Dallas. A slab that feels dry can still pass vapor. The product instructions, not a guess, decide whether a moisture test or a vapor retarder is required. Skipping that step is how a new floor cups or the adhesive fails.
Old flooring removal is its own line. Carpet, tack strips, tile, and glued vinyl do not come up in the same amount of time. The estimate should say who hauls the debris.
Include closets, doorways, and the waste from cuts. A straight hallway wastes less material than a room full of angles.
Remove or undercut door casings when the floor needs to slide under them. Set transitions where the new floor meets another surface.
Follow the layout so joints are staggered. Reset baseboards or shoe molding so the expansion gap, when the product needs one, stays covered.
Ask for the material family, the underlayment, the removal, the transitions, and the baseboard plan in writing. Stairs are priced by the step, not by folding them into the room’s square footage. Furniture moving should be explicit. Describe the current floor and whether the subfloor is a slab or wood. The form does not upload files.
After the floor is in, keep wet mopping off laminate and be careful with hardwood. Vinyl still needs its seams kept free of standing water. Those care notes belong with the product, and they are not a warranty beyond what the manufacturer actually prints.
There is no single answer. Vinyl plank is usually the more water-tolerant of the three. Laminate can look like wood at a lower material cost and dislikes standing water. Hardwood is a wood floor, and solid boards can often be sanded later if the wear layer allows it. The room and the subfloor decide more than a trend.
The material, the square footage, stair steps, furniture, removal of the old floor, subfloor repairs, transitions, and whether baseboards come off. A price per square foot from a national article is not a quote for a Dallas house.
No. PACIMP installs vinyl, laminate, and hardwood. Tile, carpet, terrazzo, and static-control commercial floors are different trades.
Dusty sanding and ladder scuffs are hard on a new floor. When paint and floors are both in the scope, the sequence should be written down. Often the floor is protected or installed after the heavy sanding.
